The Whiskey Crusaders review Wheel Horse Bourbon Whiskey which comes in at 101 proof. Wheel Horse is a sour mash pot still bourbon with a mash bill of 70% corn, 21% rye, and 9% barley. It is matured in 53-gallon American oak barrels using char #4 for 2 to 4 years. It is also non-chill filtered. O Z Tyler Distillery is where Wheel Horse is made and was founded by T. J. Monarch in 1880 called the Eagle distillery in Birk City, KY on the Green River in western Daviess County. In 1883 it was bought by W. McCulloch and in 1885 moved to Owensboro and then called the Green River Distillery. In 1918 a massive fire from a trash pile burnt the entire distillery and all its aging whiskey to the ground. Then prohibition came and in 1939 was bought by the Medley family and sold a few more times over 70 years while staying a part of it and finally sold by the Medley family again in 2007 to Angostura Bitters but recession ended that. In 2014 it was bought by Terrepure with Ron Call as master distiller who had worked for Jim Beam and Florida Distillers for 40 years who in 2016 passed the torch to his son Jacob Call who is the current Master Distiller. In 2018 O Z Tyler became part of the KY Trail and in September of this year became Green River Distilling Co again with help of the great grandson of W. McCulloch. They are DSP 10 and had the largest distillery in KY around 1900. It is the 4th largest independent bottler in the US of bourbon and makes about 90,000 barrels a year.
